This was such a cool representation of an introspective news article-you create a vibrant character that we never actually see or meet, except through second-hand recollections. And the bit about Kira is icing on the cake-it really makes the whole tale work.

Author's Response:

Thank you so much! :-)

The original credit for the character of Tekeny Ghemor goes to the writers of "Second Skin" and "Ties of Blood and Water," of course, but I really enjoyed the chance to elaborate some more on what his life must've been like before those final days.

Not inserting any sort of direct letter from Tekeny or any other way to let him speak directly to the reader (even from beyond the grave) felt like the right thing to do in this case.  Even as I wrote...I found myself with that longing I remembered from "Ties of Blood and Water," wishing he could come back but knowing it wasn't possible.  That longing and grief (if such can be felt for a fictional character) was very much the effect I wanted.

With Kira...I have to think the happenings of "Ties of Blood and Water"--everything that passed between her and Tekeny, both good and bad, would've really had an impact.  I imagine she feels quite the turmoil of emotions when she thinks of him and that some feelings may even have intensified after his death...i.e. now that he's gone, she realizes just how large the void is that he left in the land of the living.

Ohh, and I find it interesting--your rating sure did change between when you read this over at HopeStation and when you read it now.  Do shoot me a PM over at TrekBBS; I'm quite curious to know what happened, as I hadn't changed anything between versions. ;-)

We shall not go quietly into the night...

That's what ran through my head while reading this. Also, that no child should watch their parents die-or vice vs. Truly one of the most tragic things that can happen in one's life. It was hard to get through this the first time-reading it again was equally painful. Well written, no doubt about that but painful to read.

Author's Response:

It was hard for me to write it--this was actually how I was first introduced to AU Dukat, seeing the end of his and Ziyal's lives.

It's almost like that feeling at the end of Gladiator--you can almost imagine Tora with that same line as Comitus: "AM I NOT MERCIFUL?"  But what comes after...in the ultimate end, I think AU Skrain and Ziyal Dukat go on to a much better place.  And at least, if there is one other small blessing--they aren't separated long.

I don't know if you saw it in the Round Robin...but there's a reason I wrote Dukat's vision there the way that I did: Tora failed.  If she thought that torturing them, desecrating the bodies, and leaving them in the middle of the desert of Revakian was going to disturb their spirits--oh, boy, was she EVER wrong.  He didn't know why, then, in that vision, that he found himself in the Fireplains of Revakian, why that was the vision that was helping him transition from plane to plane and why he felt so peaceful there.  All I can say is that what Tora did backfired.  Writing that helped me feel a little better about this, I guess.

Well developed, almost carved instead of written. That's my first impression. I like that you slowly developed the character until he reached a moment of declaring his own identity. It was both a melancholy and hopeful story, if that's at all possible. Kudos!

Author's Response: Everything that is written is posted. I've been working on this series since 2003 or thereabouts, and it's supposed to have between 31 and 33 separate stories in it. I've made a commitment to get story 13, which will be fairly long, done by May 27th and then a bunch after that will be much shorter so I can just knock them out.

paint me dense-I don't get it. Sorry.

Author's Response: You're not dense! In the TNG episode "Timescape" Data undertakes a study of the idiom "A watched pot never boils." When confronted by Riker as to his obviously strange undertakings Data replies : "I have been testing the aphorism 'A watched pot never boils.' I boiled the same amount of water in this kettle 62 times. In some cases I have ignored the kettle, in others I have watched it intently. In every instance the water reached its boiling point in precisely 51.7 seconds. It appears I am not capable of perceiving time any differently than my internal chronometer." Riker tells him to turn off his internal chronometer. I suggest that he did so, but still timed the water on an external one - It's the advent of Data's emotion chip to really understand how "time flies." Thanks for asking!
