Bio:

I've been a dedicated fan since Star Trek first premiered. I wrote my first Trek stories at age 15, then at age 30 really got serious about it. I'm married, have two daughters, and ten grandkids. I also have quite a few gray hairs.

Summary:

An entry for the TrekBBS challenge in November 2008. The theme of the challenge was 'survival'.

This short focuses on a chapter of history from Caitlyn Ryan's past, a character who appears in my USS ACCIPITER series.

During the Cardassian / Federation wars a Federation crew are captured and endure a living hell in a secret Cardassian prison camp.

To say that was "hard to read" is an understatement. Very gripping and well-written, but I couldn't quite finish.

Author's Response:

Thank you for taking the time to read it and the comments M C Pehrson. It is hard to read. Since you couldn't finish it, rest assured, our Caitlyn did survive. More than, she managed to best her torturer by his own devices.

Funny story! Right toward the end, I figured it was a practical joke. I would so love to have seen Picard sprayed and hear the inevitable, "what on earth is the meaning of all this..."

Wow, thanks for letting me share that wistful morning with young Leonard McCoy. You really let me into his heart, with its grief for his father and his hopes for the future. It's sad knowing that his dream of a happy family life will never be realized. There will be no peaceful breakfasts with Jocelyn and Joanna, and no easy private practice. But we will all come to know and love him.

That gave me a chuckle. "Handling some quick repairs", indeed. Concise and well written. It's nice to know that Scotty has a life.

What a beautiful piece of writing! Great imagery and I felt so sad that Spock had never taken the effort to ask her. If I understand correctly, Spock's sudden insight came from the fact that his quarters were like home, and perhaps Amanda's strange actions reminded her of home, too.

Oh, this was funny. Many good reasons why to never, never, ever give an interview. But once the reporter let the poor man get a sentence out of his mouth, he said exactly the right thing. And later, Spock put it so well. "You are a brave man, Mr. Scott."

Outrageous. Exploring her thoughts without permission, and that humiliating physical. And this is only the first step? More power to her. I would have smacked someone by now!

Was Sarek really there? Or just a figment of her peculiar trance state? Why would he be standing there buck naked in the smoke-haze? Whew, I'm glad she'll be getting dressed and back to business.

I enjoyed this trek up to Sarek's lofty getaway. I'm wondering if Amanda wanted to ask Mike, "Was Sarek there at the purification ceremony? Did you see him?" She certainly did---quite a bit of him, in fact.

Logic and emotion must unite. And Amanda will be that bridge. I have been wondering if Sarek's first marriage has already been dissolved. He definitely has his eyes, his hands, and his mind on her.

Even now, Sarek has withheld the full truth from Amanda. It is not only in "the distant past" that Vulcans killed to win a mate.

Sarek's gaze settled upon Amanda as he spoke of the various reasons for ancient Vulcans conflicts. An unspoken phrase sprang to my mind: "...and they also fought over women. (And at times still do.)"

Have I begun to pick up his thoughts?

Oh yes, these humans are definitely on display. I wonder of any of the Vulcans saw Amanda's tongue sticking out? What a scandal!!!! And of course I'm wondering why Sarek chose her out of everyone on Earth?

Reviewer: M C Pehrson Signed

Sarek "unsure"? Now there's a pleasing thought. And to call Amanda's longing for his mental presence a "growing addiction" with the same emotional impact as a sexual encounter. Well said. I have used this same idea in my own series to explain a Vulcan ban against mental contact between a parent and child of the opposite sex.

Gazing into Amanda's eyes, he admits to appreciating beauty. Just as I suspected.
