Short and sweet and somehow real. Nice.

Summary: A brand new ship. A brand new crew. A brand new order.

It is 10 years since the end of the Dominion Occupation. The Alpha and Beta Quadrants are fractured, the powers of the former centuries broken and seemingly powerless. The United Federation of Planets has been destroyed, replaced by a much more fragile Federation of Allied Worlds. Yesterday’s friends have become today’s enemies, while yesterday’s enemies may yet become today’s friends.

Launched into this volatile new order, the USS Redemption is the flagship of a new age. Captained by a half-human, half-Romulan former freedom fighter, the Redemption is manned by the best crew that Starfleet can assemble, in a ship that though a shadow of former glories has the most advanced technology available.

But when the Laurentine Hegemony, a former ally who may yet become the Federation’s latest enemy, offers an olive branch of peace, the Redemption is sent to conduct negotiations for a possible treaty of cooperation. Even as the first few steps towards an understanding are taken, though, a new enemy appears on the very edges of the galaxy, ready to launch a devastating attack...

I came to this first for this review hunt based on the ficlets and I was not disappointed. You have woven this fantastically intristic universe with an array of characters, it's quite enviable. You'll forgive me for lumping the review at the end rather than over chapters.
I was most drawn to the character of Kalara (Klingons in Starfleet is something I like), her sense of honour and her sense of duty to Starfleet. The parallels between Ianto and a Trill is striking in that Ianto has Data's life experiences. His sacrifice is much akin to Spock's in Wrath of Khan or indeed, to a lesser extent, Data's own in Nemesis.
This world, or universe rather, in the future is dark, grim and deadly and for that reason and more I found it quite something. I'll do what I can for volume II.

Author's Response: Thanks for the review! I love it when people who have never read Restoration before come to it new, and to see what they enjoy, or not as the case may be. No problem for the review of it all, I know how long it can take to go back over something chapter by chapter. Look forward to hearing your thoughts on Volume 2!

"I have left the noblest part of myself on that new...planet..."
Here summed up Kirk's inner agony and torture. An image comes to mind of Kirk in Star Trek III as he steps into the turbolift and is overcome.
It's unbearably poignant and rich in emotion. In that, it is triumphant.

Author's Response:

OMG!  That's exactly the moment I see whenever I think of this piece - when he walks into the turbolift, collapses slightly against the walll, and runs his thumb alongside his nose.  It speaks volumes about his inner torment, "I feel...young" notwithstanding...

Thanks for noticing that.

Across Two Universes by Enterprise1981    Rated: T      Reviews (10
Summary:

Season 2, Episode 9:

In 2387, a major cataclysm of galactic proportion was averted when Ambassador Spock of Vulcan caused the Hobus supernova to be absorbed into an artificially created black hole. As a result of the supernova, however, the planet Romulus was destroyed and Nero sought to avenge the loss of his world. Both he and Spock were thrown back in time to the 23rd century. Nero then spent the next twenty-five years planning his revenge when Spock arrived in the past. Spock was then forced to bear witness to the destruction of the planet Vulcan in the year 2258. With ten thousand of his brethren left, Spock sought to preserve what was left his people while advising his past self in an alternate timeline to remain in Starfleet.

In 2375, while on a mission to destroy station Sentok Nor in orbit of the Dominion-occupied Betazed, Limis Vircona has a brief encounter with the Orb of Souls. The orb is accidentally opened during a scuffle with Cardassian and Jem’Hadar troops. The orb box is closed before it is able can induce any surreal visions. Things seem perfectly normal from her perspective upon returning to the USS Lambda Paz until she speaks the name of the Vulcan captain of a ship in the Seventh Fleet.

In this timeline, Lieutenant Commander Selek of the USS Epimetheus was never born as a result of Vulcan’s destruction a century earlier. In this timeline, the Federation is on the verge of defeat in the Dominion War. In this timeline, Starfleet is prepared to take extraordinary actions to assure victory over the Dominion, actions that compromise the Federation's own principles.

More so the fact that starships are named for German generals from WWII considering how they are percieved in history, extroadinary generalship perhaps but instruments of a Nazi war machine. I can't see Starfleet naming their ships after men some of whom were tried or accused of war crimes against humanity.

Quite the portrayal of the alternate universe, something I tend to ham up at the best of times. Interesting to see how children are brought up in that era, especially the 22nd Century. This is almost the literal version of the Mirror Universe Titles (for Mirror Darkly), planes bombing targets, submarines exploding the works. The sheer darkness and sometimes quiet brutality that lines its fabric.

I figure that all has to start somewhere. Cruelty and greed, in the MU (I figure) is taught at Papa's knee. As for Mom, she's submissive - she's definitely got her part in all of this.

It's certainly different to the other stories and that's no bad thing. Get a real feel for this character, she did feel real to me anyway which I think's a sign of good penmanship. You're right in that even in the 24C people can still be unkind and cruel. I can't see the utopia Rodenberry wrote as being totally realistic. I think conflict will exist in one form forever.
A sweet story, yes as Jesp says and thoughtful too. Good job

Author's Response: Well thanks, Mack. The lesson here is that the more things change, the more they the same. Adolescence will still be that point in a people's live where they're finding their identity. But at least two of the major characters show their humanity and strive to do better each day, which the Star Trek universe has always illustrated in clever ways.

I'd like to think I say this without bias that this is one of the finest Trek pieces I've read. As I've said before the writing reminds me of Diane Carey at times, that fondness and familiarty of the characters. The Holy Trinity.
An interesting spin on the episode, of what could've been, a nastier grittier version and sometimes that's needed. The final moments of Kirk/Spock packs heavy emotional weight.
Part of me wouldn't mind seeing a story down the work of the ramifications of this episode but for now, the rest is silence.
