Wonderful glimpse into Sandhurst's L.B.C. (Life Before Command). He's obviously a gifted engineer but sometimes the service requires people to step up and assume responsibilities they never imagined or wanted. I also enjoyed Captain Ebnal's command style - blunt and to the point. Great story!

Author's Response:

Much obliged, TLR!  I thought this was a nice look into the first step on Donald's path to command, as well as a chance to use the ever effervescent Captain Ebnal again.  ;-)

Regarding "House Call."

How the hell did I miss this?!?

Great little story with Pava and the Doctor. Took me a bit to figure it out, but nicely done. I really enjoy all your vignettes.

Author's Response:

I'm glad you ran across it, TLR!  Thank you for the review.  I thought it was a nice shout out to the 9th Doctor and their mutual 'friend' who still lurks out there... somewhere.

I tip my hat to you, sir! You are the undisputed master of writing battle sequences. Very taut and fluid with just the right amount of cutting-edge technology mixed with dizzying maneuvers and seat-of-the pants tactics. Sandhurst's meeting with Kincaid, while a key element to the story, seems almost like an aside to the battle-dance between the Maquis and Federation ships. Nice cliff-hanger, too, as more Maquis ships head inbound. I'm pleased that T'Ser isn't finding her new billet boring. ;-)

Author's Response:

Many thanks!  Yeah, Sandhurst may have bit off a bit more than he was prepared to chew, under the circumstances.  He wouldn't be the first person to underestimate the Maquis.  And as for T'Ser, she may rest assured that a posting aboard Gibraltar might be many things... but boring won't be one of them.  ;-)

To say this chapter was intense would be a gross understatement! Great action sequence aside is the significant meeting between the Cardassians and the League of Sovereign Colonies. At least that seems to be going well.

Not so much for Pava and co. They were badly blind-sided on the Immolator - now they're hurt and bleeding, about to face a very ticked-off Galmesh and the Maquis survivors.

Glad to see T'Ser have a hand in taking revenge for the ambush on Amberjack. I think Captain Akinola would be very pleased.

Awesome!

Author's Response:

T'Ser will definitely get in some licks on behalf of the Border Service.  Lar'ragos, on the other hand, often doesn't know when to quit, even when he should.

Summary:

For much of his life James T. Kirk believed he carried a burden of shame, one that cast a shadow of prejudice over four generations of his family. But the release from this shame, and his full flourishing as a man, did not dwell in the hands of others. It lay in him.

Recommended Preliminary Viewing: TOS, “Where no Man has Gone Before.”

I would like to express my undying gratitude for the superb feedback and valued critique I received from KayCee and Lil Black Dog. Thank you, lovely ladies, you are the solar wind in my Starship's sails.

An imaginative twist to a classic TOS episode. I enjoyed the first-person reflection by Kirk. It was interesting to hear his thoughts regarding Spock and Mitchell. And in all the times I've viewed WNMHGB, I never noticed the "R" on the tombstone. Great story!

Author's Response: Thank you for the kind words and I enjoyed your story, too. You consistently maintain a high level of description throughout, spoken with a voice ideally suited to the rawest form of personal combat. 'Meat grinder' comes to mind. Very impressive! ~ Sam.

Wow. Kudos for tackling such a sensitive issue with class and intensity. It's all the more visceral because of the contemporary relevance of the story. I think you captured well that tolerance and diversity has limits (depending on who decides what to tolerate) whereas liberty (ideally) is for all. Very well done!

Author's Response:

Until prejudice is recognized as a human problem--one that we all suffer from regardless of where our "starting point" is--then I don't think we're going to get anywhere.  That said, I will also say there's a difference between prejudice (holding an opinion in your head) and bigotry (acting like a jerk because of it).  The former is annoying, but it's the action I have real problems with.

But when it comes to diversity--I would say that there is also an alternate approach that we hear about, from Professor Shalwa.  As I told another friend of mine, I get the feeling little Shalwa was the kid that went to the spaceport for the first time and got really excited about all the pretty aliens and their foreign foods and clothing.  And then when her telepathy developed, I think that instead of judging their thought patterns like Lwaxana Troi did, she thought that was another neat extra "spice" in the recipe, too.  I see Shalwa as conveying that excitement to her students.  Celebrating them and letting them celebrate others and themselves. :-)

Summary:

Star Trek: Gibraltar At the Gates CoverIt’s been two years since the end of the Dominion War. The Alpha Quadrant is still reeling in the aftermath of the most destructive interstellar war in over two millennia. The Romulan Star Empire teeters on the brink of economic and social collapse as the Klingons struggle to come to grips with a failing warrior ethos that has left their society riddled with nepotism and corruption. What remains of the Cardassian Union is in shambles with a road to recovery that will be measured in decades.

As the great powers of the quadrant lick their wounds, the second-tier governments vie for position and spark a firestorm of ‘minor’ conflicts that further sap the strength of the beleaguered Federation. The Alshain/Son’a War, the Talarian Incursion, the Benzar Plebiscite Crisis, the Velk Incident, a resurgent Maquis movement and religious terrorism on Bajor… the crises mount as an overwhelmed Starfleet struggles to cope.

Amidst this turmoil, a new shadow takes shape, a potential catastrophe the likes of which has never been seen in the Federation’s history. Keeping the truth of the impending danger from their wartime allies, Starfleet engages in a desperate plan that just might give the UFP the time it needs to meet the rising threat head on, and more importantly, on the Federation’s terms.

I'm enjoying the epic scope of this story! The Task Force Vanguard context is interesting on its own, but add in the wonderful character work and the multiple nightmare scenarios (The Baron, the Amon, T'Ser's promotion, Sandhurst's kidnapping, etc.) and you have a United Trek tale for the ages. My only regret is seeing the USS Gibraltar sail away and out of the story. I hope we see "The Rock" again, in some future story.

Yup. I killed Liseth. err... sorry...? Wanted a gut punch ending obviously but also to hint at a darker untold tale of corruption. As you figure, there appear to be rogue Border Dogs involved in the slaver ring. Not good, not good. Oh, I how have missed the wild mis-adventures of Cap'n Tabby (sorry- an old and dangerous habit) and her fine ship, the Rabid Rabbit (sorry again!). Love the dinner reparte' - Captain Chase is ever the congenial and sarcastic host. Her passengers are obviously hiding something (S.I.? Hmmm) and their destination is equally intriguing. Nothing like taking a Millenium-class vessel with serious system maladies into Klingon space - I mean, what could possibly go wrong? Here's hoping Hex can get his head and the ship together, and quickly.
Great stuff! I have truly missed this!

Author's Response:

Hee, hee. You're the only one I allow to call her Tabby or the ship that TLR! Yup something fishy about our passengers - but what? And Klingons - they're probably cuddly to Tabatha. Thanks for reading TLR. More coming.

That's Tabby - a lot of spunk, full of, um, that is, an endless variety of words. You have to admire her courage in such a hopeless situation. As to her holding the Kessel Run record, well . . . ;-)

Icarus' Wrath - now that's a great name for a horse! Another nice vignette depicting the wild (dare I say, insane?) antics of Tabatha Chase as she eludes some Klingons by traversing a star's corona!!! The lady has some self-destructive tendencies, I fear.

Yeah, thank you TLR. She loves her ship and is fiercely proud of it and loyal to it and it to she. And if anyone can drag it out of the swamp it's Tabatha Chase.

Author's Response:

Insane antics require partners of equally dubious  proper sense of things to do. Colt was/is a perfect partner in - well for a wonder not crime - Really enjoyed taking Colt out for a spin with Tabatha. Her story wouldn't be the same without a mention of John along the way. I dare say they've tangled, sparred and helped one another out in many a circumstance. Look forward to exploring future/past escapades between them.
