That's a fairly knowlegeable alter-ego.. perhaps a Section 31 agent? That would qualify as seriously deep cover... I recall a story in which a character deliberately particitioned his mind to experience life as an average journalist as the public-facing alter-ego super secret agent. The journalist accidentally discovered his alter-ego, nearly blowing his own mission in the process. Wish I had thought of it!

Interesting mixture of technologies to create the subspace rift. A homemade system cobbled together to do dangerous work... Shades of Stranger Things...

Thanks!! rbs

Author's Response:

Ah, yes, but this story predates Stranger Things by over a decade. ;-)  Thanks again for your reviews!

Ooooh, neat! I want my very own spatial rift. I love the override for the EMH, though the number 31 has me a bit suspicious...

Uh oh...a spatial rift? Down on the planet? Doesn't sound like a good situation one bit! Plazzi's response was great. We also get some nice background on two interesting characters, Lightner and Juneau. I agree with Lightner; watching the automated controls keep the ship in orbit DOES sound boring!

Author's Response:

It's the curse of the helm officer... when the ship's at relative 'stop' life becomes tedious.  Thank you for the feedback!  As for the spatial rift, agreed, they seldom herald the arrival of anything good.

Wow. A spatial rift?! Cool!! :)

I really liked the opening to this chapter, with the POV of Ensign Lightner - he seems like a really interesting part of this crew, with the same difficult path as the rest, and some baggage to deal with.

And I am getting seriously interested by the character of Olivia Juneau - I want to know what this alter-ego is and whether she is aware of it!

Another cracking chapter!

Author's Response:

Much obliged. :-D  I'm gratified that you're enjoying the story.

Hell...a spacial rift in the middle of a planet? That's bad. Very, very bad.

Author's Response:

As Ted might have said, "I think strange things are afoot on planet Pierosh II."  ;-)

31. Section 31 perhaps? Now we know for sure the culprit for the planting of the device in the previous story, but we still don't fully know why.
It's not looking as though the partially fried scientist will be able to give a lot of answers to this greater mystery, but I suppose time will tell!

Author's Response:

Clues abound, but will any of the crew be able to piece them together?  Thanks for the review!

Oh, AWESOME! Juneau going all secret agent on the EMH, then the discovery of the secret levels... just completely awesome.

Author's Response:

Much obliged for the kind words. :-)
